A Psychology of Success and Excellence

As a new principal with a dynamic staff, we are working together to create a culture of excellence. We are in the process of defining what this looks like as a school community.  Our newly created Teaching and Learning Team (TLT) has been immersed in research around the characteristics of effective schools, but first we need a foundation.  The foundation of any school rests on the beliefs and values of the teachers, as well as all stakeholders.

World -renowned Standford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea - the power of our mindset.

Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success - but whether we approach our goals with a fixed or growth mindset.  She makes clear why praising our children's intelligence and ability doesn't foster self esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success.  With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them improve in school, as well as reach our own goals, personal and professional.  Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs and athletes already know, and shows how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area - (back jacket of Mindset, The New Psychology of Success).

As we venture forward together, we will be building upon this foundation of a growth mindset - all children can learn with effort - and ability is not a fixed trait.
